This is the whole argument in one line. Pingdom's own migration FAQ says "Text message or SMS alerts are not currently available in SolarWinds Observability", and SolarWinds Observability is where Pingdom accounts are being moved over 30 to 60 days. Meanwhile every Pingdom Synthetic band you can buy still lists an SMS quota, from 50 at $18 per month up to 1,500 at $28,548 per month. Better Stack puts unlimited phone calls and unlimited SMS inside a single responder seat at $34 per month monthly, $29 annually. If your escalation path ends in someone's phone buzzing, one product is adding that capability and the other is currently subtracting it.
Alerting is a product here, not a notification setting
Pingdom notifies contacts. Better Stack runs rotations, escalation policies and acknowledgements, so an unacknowledged page moves to the next person on schedule instead of sitting in an inbox. Teams that were paying for Pingdom plus a separate on-call tool can usually collapse two bills into one, which is where the seat pricing stops looking expensive.
The free tier is real work, not a demo
10 monitors, 10 heartbeats and a status page at $0, with checks as frequent as 30 seconds on paid plans. Pingdom has no free tier at all, only a 30-day trial, so the smallest possible Pingdom setup is $18 per month and the smallest useful Better Stack setup can be nothing. Heartbeats deserve a specific mention: they catch a cron job or backup that silently stopped running, which no HTTP check will ever notice.
Fewer false pages by design
Better Stack checks every monitor from at least four locations and only opens an incident once at least three of them fail. Pingdom's documentation describes rotating through about ten probe servers per selected region but does not publish an equivalent quorum rule, so the behaviour you get is harder to reason about before you are paged at 3am. Treat any vendor's own reliability percentages as marketing; the location logic is checkable in the docs, which is why it is worth quoting instead.
Where Pingdom still wins
Probe geography, and it is not close. More than 100 locations with regional targeting is something Better Stack's four regions do not match, and it matters if your users are distributed and you need to prove that an outage was regional rather than global. Pingdom also carries years of accumulated baseline data for existing accounts plus 13 months of RUM retention, and none of that exports anywhere.
Then the seat maths, which is the case nobody writes up. Pingdom includes unlimited users on every Synthetic and RUM plan. Better Stack charges $29 per responder per month on annual billing. Six people on call is $174 per month, twelve is $348 per month, and that is on top of monitors. A twenty-person infrastructure group that wants everyone able to see and receive alerts is genuinely cheaper on Pingdom, and if that describes you, the migration case rests on the SMS gap alone rather than on price.
Migrating Pingdom to Better Stack
The path most teams take:
1. Inventory first. Pull every check out through the Pingdom API: URL, interval, expected status, regions, alert contacts, maintenance windows. Flag your advanced (transaction) checks separately, because those are the ones without a clean one-to-one landing spot, and note that maintenance windows and alert policies have no import path at all.
2. Recreate, do not paste. Better Stack's bulk import takes one URL per line, which gets you monitors with default settings and nothing else. For anything beyond a handful, drive the Monitors API from the export you just made so intervals, regions and escalation rules land correctly on the first pass.
3. Run both for one cycle. Keep Pingdom live for a full billing period and compare incident counts side by side. The overlap costs double on purpose: it is how you find out that a check you thought was equivalent is firing on a different threshold. Rewire alert routing last, once the counts agree.
