The best Pingdom alternatives, compared honestly
Pingdom still does the boring part extremely well: one-minute checks from more than 100 locations, twenty years of baseline data, and unlimited users on every plan with no per-seat billing. What changed is where it lives. SolarWinds is moving accounts into SolarWinds Observability Digital Experience, and its own migration FAQ says the old Pingdom account goes read-only after roughly 90 days, that check IDs change, and that SMS alerts are not currently available on the other side. Why teams look elsewhere
What pushes teams off Pingdom
Pingdom did not get worse at checking whether a URL responds. Almost every migration write-up since the SolarWinds Observability move began points at the same six things, and five of them are documented by SolarWinds itself.
The account you have is not the account you keep
The official migration FAQ states: "Over the next 30-60 days, we will move you to the next generation of Pingdom, SolarWinds Observability Digital Experience." After roughly 90 days the old Pingdom account is read-only, and the migration is "a one time action" that cannot be repeated. Teams who wanted to evaluate the market usually do it now rather than after the switch.
SMS alerting is a line item that does not cross over
Every Pingdom Synthetic band bundles SMS, from 50 SMS at the entry tier to 1,500 at the top. The same migration FAQ says plainly: "Text message or SMS alerts are not currently available in SolarWinds Observability." For anyone whose 3am escalation path is a text message, that single sentence is the whole reason to shop.
Every check gets a new ID
"Availability checks in Pingdom and SolarWinds Observability will have a different check_id." If you drive checks from Terraform, a deploy pipeline or an internal dashboard, that is a scripted rewrite of every integration. Since you are touching that code anyway, comparing what else could sit behind it is close to free.
The entry price is $18, not the $10 everyone quotes
Comparison sites still list Pingdom "from $10/mo". The live calculator on pingdom.com/pricing on 4 August 2026 priced the smallest Synthetic band, 10 uptime checks and 1 advanced check, at $18/mo monthly or $16.50/mo annual. Real User Monitoring is a separate meter starting at another $18/mo, so uptime plus RUM is $36/mo before you add a single check.
Transaction checks are gated behind uptime volume
The entry band includes exactly one advanced (transaction) check. The cheapest band with 10 advanced checks is "50 Uptime, 10 Advanced" at $78/mo. To buy nine more transaction checks you also buy forty uptime checks you never asked for. This is the single most common reason a Pingdom bill grows faster than the monitoring does.
Small signals that the product is on maintenance
The included SMS allowance freezes at 1,500/mo from the 3,000-check band ($3,432/mo) all the way to the 30,000-check band ($28,548/mo): eight times the price, identical alerting. Meanwhile the pricing page still sells add-ons "Powered by SolarWinds AppOptics", a product that reached end of life on 31 January 2026, still links a COVID-19 Resource Center, and the mobile apps were retired back in 2021.

Pingdom bundles three jobs that the market now sells separately: synthetic checks (is it up, how fast, does the checkout flow still work), alerting and on-call (who gets woken, through which channel), and real user monitoring (what actual visitors experienced). Very few teams need all three from one vendor, and the cheapest exit usually comes from splitting them. This ranking is written for a team leaving Pingdom, not as a generic "best monitoring tool" list, so it weighs alerting parity and the import path heavily. Every pick lists one honest strength and one real weakness.
The closest thing to feature parity plus the piece Pingdom is losing. Free tier is 10 monitors and heartbeats with 1 status page; checks go down to 30 seconds; extra monitors are $21/mo per 50 on annual billing. The reason it lands at #1: an on-call responder seat at $29/mo annual includes unlimited phone call and SMS alerts, which is precisely what does not survive the SolarWinds Observability move. Weakness: three separate meters (monitors, responder seats, telemetry), so a five-person on-call rotation costs $145/mo in seats alone, and bulk import only takes a list of URLs, one per line.
MIT licensed, roughly 89,800 GitHub stars, and demonstrably alive: release 2.5.0 on 1 August 2026, with 2.0 adding MariaDB support and rootless Docker. Runs in one container, covers HTTP, TCP, ping, DNS, keyword and certificate expiry, and ships a status page. Weakness, and it is not small: no importer exists (issue #1190, "Import from CSV", open since January 2022), and a single node means you monitor from one vantage point instead of Pingdom's 100-plus locations, so a local network blip reads as an outage and you now own the uptime of your uptime monitor.
Checks are Playwright code in your repository, versioned and reviewed like the rest of the app. Hobby is free with 10 uptime monitors, 1,000 browser runs and 10,000 API runs per month; Starter is $24/mo for 3,000 browser runs, Team $64/mo for 12,000. Crucially, browser checks are billed per run, so five transaction flows cost what five flows cost instead of forcing you into a 50-uptime-check band. Weakness: you have to model run volume (a Playwright suite bills one run per 30 seconds of runtime, overage is $6.50 per 1k), status pages are a $9 to $30 add-on, and for plain HTTP pings it is the wrong tool.
The pragmatic swap when all you really bought Pingdom for was "tell me when it's down". The free plan carries 50 monitors at 5-minute intervals with SSL and domain expiry checks, which already covers what many Pingdom customers pay $78/mo for. Solo is €9/mo at 60-second intervals, Team €29/mo for 100 monitors at 30 seconds, Scale €54/mo down to 15 seconds. Bulk Upload takes a CSV template. Weakness: no browser or transaction checks at all, so Pingdom advanced checks have nowhere to go, and SMS is prepaid credits ($3 for 10, $100 for 1,000) rather than an allowance.
The most direct incumbent-for-incumbent trade, and the one that fixes the transaction-check gating outright: Web Uptime at $10/mo monthly ($9 annual) covers 25 websites with transaction monitors included, and Web Perf at $39/mo covers 40 websites with 8 transaction monitors. The free plan monitors up to 50 resources. Weakness: Zoho-style module and add-on sprawl means the quote you build rarely matches the price you first saw, basic versus advanced monitor accounting is easy to get wrong when sizing, and the interface feels a generation behind the newer tools here.
Synthetic checks land as Prometheus metrics next to everything else you already graph, defined through Terraform or the API. The free tier is generous for this shape of product: 100k API and 10k browser test executions per month. Pro adds a $19/mo platform fee and then charges $5 per 10k API executions and $50 per 10k browser executions. Weakness: it only makes sense as part of Grafana Cloud, browser executions get expensive fast at that rate, and Enterprise carries a $25,000 minimum annual commitment, so there is a hard jump between self-serve and contract.
The closest match to Pingdom's actual shape at the small end: the free plan gives 10 uptime monitors at 5 minutes plus a page speed monitor, a domain monitor and an SSL monitor, which is four Pingdom line items in one. Superior is $20.41/mo annual for 100 monitors at 1-minute intervals, 15 page speed monitors and 75 SMS credits per month. Weakness: 30-second checks only appear on Business at $66.66/mo annual, and team membership is capped at 9 people below Enterprise, which is a real ceiling if you were relying on Pingdom's unlimited users.
Left off deliberately: Datadog Synthetics, New Relic and Dynatrace are full observability suites priced for that job rather than a like-for-like uptime swap. SolarWinds Observability Digital Experience is the migration destination, so it is the baseline here, not an alternative to it. Status-page-first products such as Instatus and Hyperping are excellent at status pages and thinner as synthetic monitoring.

When Pingdom is still the right choice
Migrating is not free. Nobody imports Pingdom history, check IDs and alert policies get rebuilt by hand or by script, and the overlap period where both systems run costs double. There is also one number that quietly favours Pingdom and gets missed in every listicle: every Synthetic and RUM plan includes unlimited users.
Pingdom is still right if…
- Lots of people need access and alerts. This is the case where Pingdom's apparent weakness is a strength: unlimited users on every plan. Twelve people on the on-call rotation costs $0 extra on Pingdom and $348/mo in responder seats on Better Stack.
- You genuinely use the probe network. One-minute checks from more than 100 locations with regional targeting is not something you reproduce on a self-hosted box, and geography-specific outages are exactly what it catches.
- Your RUM history matters. 13 months of real user data with unlimited sites is a real asset, and it does not export into any of the tools above.
- SolarWinds Observability is where you were heading anyway. If you also want infrastructure, logs and traces from one vendor, the migration is a step toward that platform rather than away from something.
Look elsewhere if…
- SMS or phone escalation is your paging channel: Better Stack, where a $29/mo responder seat includes unlimited calls and texts.
- You need more transaction checks, not more uptime checks: Checkly bills browser runs directly, or Site24x7 bundles transaction monitors from $10/mo.
